First day of vacation. Insanely busy couple of weeks trying to get work projects under control. Haven't had much time to post, figures that the first moment I would have would be in an airport - story of my life.

Off to a shitty start, flights came in late last night, which means they leave late today, which means we miss our connection to Lihui. UA desk agent was clearly stressed trying to reschedule us. Who would have thought so many people were going to Hawaii in June. She moved us onto a flight that was already oversold that will get us in 7 hours later. Which I think is funny because somehow she guaranteed us a seat but obviously someone else is getting bumped. Such is the dog-eat-dog of air travel.

First time using my Nexus card so I got pulled aside for interrogation. So far this Nexus thing has turned out to be nothing but a huge pain in the ass, well not reall - the cavity search was so amateur.

We now have 7 hours to kill in SF. No idea what we'll do, I guess maybe go look around a bit and then head back to the airport. I'm bummed because I just want to get to the Island.

For anyone that is interested, we are staying on Kuaaiaiia - but I never know when stop spelling Hawaiian words.

Never been to Hawaii, but I'm guessing that once you get to the island, you'll forget how to spell English. ;)

When you're all recovered from your jet lag and settled in, make you go to the Wahoo Cafe for dinner. It's a little pricey but SO good!

As time goes on, I realize more and more how happy being on Kauai made me. It's so pretty, not crowded, and the air is so fucking clean.

You have lots to look forward to. Where on the island are you staying?

The Lawai Beach Resort - do you know it?

No, but we stayed in the same area - Marriott Waiohai Beach Club -

I don't know if you have a guidebook but one would be very useful for Kauai as there's so much stuff to go see. We used the Ultimate Guide to Kauai, you should be able to find it there.

There are incredible beaches, but because of the change in seasons our experience in January will have been very different. In general:

If there's a waterfall nearby, go see it.

If there are "bathing pools" that the surf conditions will allow you to get to and wade into, do it. When we were there there were 35ft waves on the north shore, and we couldn't get in.

Secret Beach, on the north shore, was astoundingly beautiful.

I love the drive along the north shore, it's a completely different feel than the south. Pull off at all the turnouts and look and take pictures.

Haena Beach, at the end of the north shore road, is lovely. If you are adventurous and hikey, do the Kalalau trail is like nothing you've ever done (probably). It goes from Haena up up up the side of the mountain and then across, providing the most amazing views. Then down to a beach and from there, if you're really into it, you can hike back up to a waterfall.

It's two miles up and over the first section, and two miles up to the waterfall. It is challenging, some places muddy, but it's astoundingly beautiful. We did it in sandals and socks that could be periodically rinsed out in the stream. Take LOTS of water.

An easy beautiful walk very close to where you're staying is the mahaulepu trail. Isolated beaches, etc. etc.

Kipu Falls was an adventure, too. Pretty driving to get there.

I'm jealous. Have a great time.

Thank you so much for the tips. I have that very guide book on the table right beside me. I'm feeding all of your suggestions back to our hosts who have been coming here for quite a few years so I expect he will know most of the places you mention. Only been here a day and a half and I'm about ready to buy a timeshare!Or I'd just stay forever if I knew that eventually my credit cards wouldn't be canceled.

No rubber gloves for the cavity search? I hate when newbies forget to get their gear on.

Travel safe, slut.

So I shouldn't bother with the Nexus card then? My father has been on my case to get one but I'm just not convinced that 1) I'd get one (given last year's fiasco) and 2) it would be worse the money and trouble to get it.

I'm sure you'll have a grand time once you get there and forget all about the hick ups on the way.

*hugs* miss you!

Congratulations on starting your vacation!

For many years, Kauai was my absolute favorite island in the chain. Now that you're there, it's probably even more magnificent.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

(Do be careful; at Women & Children's we treated a lot of systemic subtropical fungal infections; you are vacationing inside a moist convection oven.)
